About VIDA

The Video and Image Data Access (VIDA) collection contains annotated science video and images with content and language appropriate for K-8 standards-based science. VIDA is meant to facilitate sharing the excitement of current research among scientists, science faculty, and teachers through the use of images. Donated images will complement hands-on inquiry at the K-8 level. VIDA is affiliated with the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) through the BEN project.

Anyone can be a contributor by donating the use of video and still images for which you own copyright or that are in the public domain. Children and science instructors will use the images in K-8 science classes and at the university level in teacher preparation courses. A select subset of the donated images will be freely available via the World Wide Web.

The VIDA project does not keep the original material. The originals are copied and returned to the copyright owner. The VIDA project acknowledges the copyright owner. Should anyone wish to use an image for publication, VIDA directs them to contact the copyright owner for permissions.

About K-8 Life Science instruction

Good K-8 science teachers are likely to use curricular programs that were carefully researched and designed to provide an inquiry-based, collaborative learning program. Full Option Science System (FOSS) was developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California Berkeley and is distributed by Delta Education. The National Science Resource Center in collaboration with both the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Sciences developed the STC kits distributed through Carolina Biological. The Insights kits were developed by Education Development Center, Inc. and are available through Kendall-Hunt Publishing Company. BSCS Science Tracks, BioKIDS, and Understandings of consequence were developed by investigators who received funding from the National Science Foundation to improve K-8 curriculum for teaching science. Image sets are appropriate for the VIDA collection if they show how some of these units approach life science content to meet National Science Education Standards and California Science Content Standards. Each link provides more detailed information from the original source. This information can be used to help college students who will become K-8 teachers adequately prepare to use inquiry-based instruction when they teach children.
